Around August 2019 in La California neighborhood, San José, there had been reports of rape and harassment, in addition to people putting drugs in the drinks of women without their consent, making it a hostile and dangerous space for those who enjoy going out to dance and be part of these night spaces in a safe way. From my position at the time, as a waitress in a bar in the neighborhood, I felt the need to take an action to show the need for girls to feel safe in the place they share and enjoy during their free time.
The initiative was to intervene on the walls with posters that incite women toappropriate the space, and take care of each other on their night out while still enjoying themselves. Referring to the desCULOnizacion of space, we seek to demonstrate your right to use a body that you enjoy through dance and nightlife. The intervention consists of letter and double letter size posters, glued in series near the spaces where there were complaints of violent acts. The resistance lies in the appropriation of public space, beginning with a small step: the graphics that inhabit it.
